The Brighton & Hove Methodist Circuit supports work at both of our local universities; The University of Brighton and The University of Sussex. The work is very different in the two locations because Sussex University is campus-based locally at Falmer, whereas Brighton University is spread, not only across the city, but also has campuses farther afield such as in Eastbourne, so we work very much as a team with colleagues to cover as much of the university as we can between us.

In true Methodist fashion, however, much of what we offer is hospitality-based. Sadly we have been very much restricted by COVID protocols of late but we hope to return to something of what we have found helpful to students before too much longer.

At Sussex, focus is on the needs of international students through the provision of welcome packs for new arrivals, to a wider student demographic; a Christmas lunch on campus and various social events including a Remembrance evening and pop-up food events working in conjunction with the foodbank, which is hosted by the Sussex Chaplaincy at the Meeting House.

For Brighton students focus is on a coffee-shop drop in model which includes knitting and other crafts at the arts building in Grand Parade and a Christmas lunch at the on-site restaurant.

We also offer a Christmas carol service (jointly hosted between the two universities) which has been online during the COVID pandemic.

We are always open to ideas, particularly coming from the students and are currently looking at the possibility of a Craftivism/ climate change interest group. We are part of the Student Christian Movement (SCM) and Dorset Gardens Methodist is a Link Church.

Chaplaincy and Faith & Spirituality activities are advertised on the relevant University website and on their Facebook group where we can also be contacted. We also continue to offer in-person meetings where it is safe so to do, as well as online.
